Brisbane Roar is close to signing former Socceroo Joel King after his departure from Sydney FC. King, a 25-year-old left-back, fell out of selection favour during Sydney's 2025-26 campaign, starting in only seven A-League games and coming off the bench in two other matches. His final appearance for the Sydneysiders was on January 31 in a 4-1 derby win over the Wanderers. It's understood King is close to signing with the Roar, who are revamping their squad after a disappointing season. His potential arrival could be timely if current Brisbane left-back, New Zealand international James McGarry, returns to his former club Wellington Phoenix. Another Roar target, former Melbourne City midfielder Zane Schreiber, is understood to have rejected Brisbane's advances to instead link with the premiership-winning Newcastle Jets.
